Tips For A Successful Outreach
Preparation is an important part of any missions trip and can make the difference between a positive and negative outreach experience. Here are some tips to get you started.
Before you Go …
Prepare your heart. Use a journal and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in writing down measurable, realistic spirtual goals for your trip.
Tell your pastor what you’d like to do, get input, and ask for prayer.
Take along pictures of your family to share with those you meet on your trip, since most cultures place great value on family ties. Leave behind any photos that show people in immodest attire.
Dress appropriately and inconspicuously. Many cultures consider “traditional” western clothing to be indecent or too casual. Check and make sure to take clothes appropriate to both the culture and climate to which you’re traveling.
Evaluate your expectations before you go. Are they realistic? Have you based them on the right motives?
Consider purchasing a small, inexpensive phrase book in the language of the people you’re visiting. A few well - learned phrases can go a long way toward building relationships with your new friends.
If you are on any medications, carry them in their original bottles and take enough extra in case of travel delays.
Pack lightly! Walk around the block carrying everything you plan to take with you and decide if there are things you can do without.
